Playful and memory evoking design has always been a hit on the runway, giving an insight into the emotions and upbringings of designers. Fashion is often an outlet for creatives to put their personal stories into public display.
Rachel Antonoff’s sugary sweet S/S 2012 collection saw models in Peter Pan collars and pigtails set up in a slightly creepy, black and white illustrated dolls house backdrop. The collection itself was pretty and petite, draped in polka dots and girlish dresses.
A boyhood adventure was the inspiration behind Craig Green’s S/S 2017 menswear collection which strongly resembled school rugby kits and Scout’s uniforms. Green used his own childhood experiences being heavily involved in the Scouts with his own mother leading the groups.
“We’ve been looking at Scout scarves and boyhood adventure. I was a scout when I was a kid. My mum was actually one of the leaders” – Craig Green
The airy, ethereal aesthetic of Gareth Pugh’s AW 2014/15 collection was pushed further into unwearable with large clockwork mechanic additions to the beautiful garments. The wind-up doll look gave the collection a surreal fairy-tale feel with an edge.
The S/S 2015 Barbie collection by Jeremy Scott at Moschino gave each of their front row guests a custom made boxed Moschino Barbie doll, with a real life Barbie model opening the show in an outfit to match the gifted toy. Full of plastic-fantastic fuchsia and bubblegum sass from the models, the legendary doll was freshened up and brought to life.
