Fashion and architecture, an impressive pair that both express ideas of cultural, social, and personal identity, echoing each other in function; to shelter the human body.

Both frontiers of aesthetics and creativity, the innovative duo have been drawn consistently parallel throughout history, and up until present day have dipped into one another’s innovative pools of ideas.

Winde Rienstra | 3D Sculptural Design

Fashion designer Winde Rienstra explores the boundaries of fashion, art and architecture. Her fondness of wood has led her to venture and flourish in the world of 3D sculptural design, constructing spatial fabrications that sculpt and contour the human form. Rienstra, isn’t afraid to experiment with materials and ideas, a trait seen within her unique shoe collection, mimicking small, architectural-like figures adorning the foot.

Sou Fujimoto |  House N

The Spring Summer 2016 collection by Swiss fashion house Akris is heavily inspired by Japanese artist Sou Fujimoto’s architecture designs.

Providing the inspirational aesthetic for the garments, the catwalk bore a replica of his tree-filled House N as a backdrop to enhance the character and identity of the fashion pieces presented.

Serpentine Gallery Pavilion | Kensington Gardens. UK

Designs such as his glass blue shopping centre in Miami and the 2013 Serpentine Gallery Pavilion have been reinterpreted as outfits for the brands latest collection.

Maintaining Fujimoto’s artistic flair, some outfits echoed his structural style directly, whilst others obtained a more abstract quality and charm.

Hsieh I Ting | Silver Pentagon Ring | Silver Triangle Ring

SHOP HSIEH I TING

Inspired by arts, architectures, movies and her own illustration Hsieh I Ting, a Taiwanese jewellery designer and illustrator, has created her intricate Folding space collection. Her collection combines a sense of simplistic beauty and aesthetics drawn from her love of fine art, whilst retaining a conscious level of structure and balance driven by her connection with architecture and how it influences space and environments.

Boky Lee | Mirage Collection

SHOP BOKY LEE

Jewellery designer Boky Lee recently completed her MA in jewellery and metal at the Royal College of Art in 2015. With her main inspirations originating from buildings and organised structural shapes, Lee designs bold yet simplistic fashion pieces. Her most recent collection Mirage has been informed by scaffolding, with enhanced focus on the mechanical connections and acute structural elements, the talented designer mirrors the junctures seen in the construction of her fashion accessories.

Vivien Chong | Pleating Architecture | 2013 Collection

Enthused by Steven Holl’s architectural work, in 2013 Vivien Chong presented her graduate collection at Central Saint Martins, London. Entitled Pleating Architecture, her designs also pay tribute to other modern art forms such as sculpture. Coated with beautiful layers of delicate material her garments retain an eccentric grace and elegance, whilst experimenting with sculptural concepts to create modernistic fashion pieces.

Commenting on the parallel practices of the fashion and architectural worlds, the infamous Somerset House exhibition centre released an insightful guidebook clamining ;

“Both address the human scale, but the proportions, sizes and shapes differ enormously. And while fashion is, by it’s very nature, ephemeral, architecture traditionally has a more solid, monumental and permanent presence.” — Somerset House
