The term athleisure is no stranger to the catwalk, but Summer 2016 introduces performance clothing with a sharp fashion edge. As the global activewear market is set to reach $83 billion in sales by 2020, according to a report released by Morgan Stanley last year -this season’s sees high-end design and sport functionality combine with a knock-out punch.
The athletic compositions of Lacoste’s S/S 16 campaign show enlarged graphic prints in bold sport inspired colours. The collection is a combination of structured and boxy active wear and billowing hooded capes, not a far cry from the hoods on silk robes of pre-fight boxers.
For Jean Paul Gaultier’s final catwalk collection for S/S 15, he designed pieces honouring chapters in his fashion life. Superhero-cum-wrestlers featured heavily, with heavy zips on sporty bombers and strong fragmented typography with an 80’s influence. Mesh becomes more contemporary through laser cutting and garments are lifted with a satin finish.
Athleisure becomes ath-luxe with Puma’s boxing inspired pieces released earlier this year combining lightweight metallic wovens with slick knockout sneakers with the original 70’s feel. With a design so strong it has lasted over 4 decades, Puma keep their authentic shoe relevant with upgraded performance materials.
Rather than athletic themed high-end collections, S/S 16 sees active wear brands taking notes from the runways, creating activewear that is sleek and inspiring whilst maintaining incredible performance functionality.
