Sideline Collective is a small group of London based creatives. Their philosophy revolves around creating simple, yet non-conventional works, that are designed to grab people’s attention, encourage conversation and be notable for their clarity of message. The latest work from Sideline founder, Joseph Ernst, creates a message of few words with a set of empty newspapers titled ‘Nothing in the News’.

Trained as an architect, Joseph Ernst is a begetter in all aspects of life, as a creative director, artist, filmmaker and self-confessed optimist. The creative’s most recent project initiates minimalism from media. ‘Nothing in the News’ is a collection of publications from around the world, emblazoned with little more than a title and followed by pages of blanks.

The artist, who also works as a film maker for the likes of Channel 4, often focuses on media in his work and is fully aware of how to influence an audience. He looks at how we perceive other’s lives, how our inter-connectedness is increasing, and how our access to knowledge is only growing.

In the 21st century the bombardment of media is relentless and undeniable. From ad boards to computer screens; the devices glued to our palm; 3 second Snapchat news and the papers thrust into your hand on the street. All this makes it hard to switch off. With little escape from mostly vacuous information and the feeling of choice, everyday decisions are becoming more difficult for the masses.

With no anticipation to slow down, we abide one notification at a time, as checking feeds becomes a compulsive and common behaviour from which little is gained. This is then followed by the more recent trend to rediscovering simplicity, meaning and mindfulness. The ability to focus on one thing is becoming increasingly precious, and art therefore a powerful mode for which to practice this.

Although under current circumstances, uncensored news is as vital for democracies as it has ever been, real time outlets lead more to the confused than the informed. This project offers a little respite to this information overload. While we forget what it’s like to be bored or switch off, we need a moment of nothingness as much as we need facts.
