In the famous dialogue where Plato discussed the death of Socrates, Phaedo depicts the idea that the human soul is immortal. Behind this idea is the respect of the nature and the pursuit of personal freedom. Based on such brand philosophy, Phaedo‘s presentation of its first collection displayed distinctive accent compared to other glamorous and commercial fashion shows in Milan. With sounds from nature as its background, the conceptual, spiritual and emotional journey started.
Zhuzhu is the designer behind Phaedo, who has been preparing this very first collection for 3 years with his team. In the exclusive interview with HausMag, Zhuzhu shared with us that the process of designing was not difficult. What he had struggled for so long was self-positioning, namely brand positioning. Through various handworks like carving bricks (which were also shown in the presentation scene) ,Zhuzhu tried to see the inside of himself and found out the design he truly wanted to work on.
The materials of this collection were natural fabrics, silk and cotton. What amazed everyone was with special experimental process, these 3 simple fabrics performed unexpected textures. The leather-like garments were, in fact, made of silk and cotton. Colours of the collection was hand-dyed using persimmons and coffee. After exposed to light, the hues change with each passing day. The longer they were exposed, the deeper they toned.
Phaedo women are wise and powerful. Black leather boots add a masculine touch to plainly colored garments with straightforward cuts. Models moved very slowing and quietly on the course. This installation expressed the designer’s intended messages clearly. He wanted to create a different time and space. Here, time slowed down and noises died down. Undoubtedly, it is also the designer’s approach to this desired peacefulness and tranquility.
“We have waited 3 years for this first collection. We are more than ready to launch ourselves. “
Zhuzhu, creative director of Phaedo
In the interview, Zhuzhu also expressed his ambiton of being a Chinese designer. For him, it’s high time for the world to realize China is no longer representing solely manufacture and copying. The country’s creative power is incredible too. However instead of carving his name eagerly on the marble of the world fashion industry, Zhuzhu emphasized on the significance of a good team. A team that sticks together for the same belief and aesthetic vision lies at the core of Phaedo.
Special thanks for Zhuzhu’s insight and kind words in this exclusive interview with HausMag.
