Located within the bustling commercial Binjiang district in Hangzhou, China, lies a library with a difference. The Zhongshuge-Hangzhou bookstore offers an experience for visitors to explore reading material in a mirrored, curved water passage.
Intricately designed by Shanghai-based architecture and design studio XL-Muse, the enchanting interior resembles that of the surrounding area. The impressive array of reading material is displayed across a number of rooms, whilst the mirrored ceiling reflects the charming library adding a theatrical aura.
“In the past, guided by water, many literati and poets visited and gathered here,” they explained. “[The bridges] used to be the guiding factor of culture and commerce, and they represent that the bookstore is the bond between humans and books at the same time.” (XL-Muse, 2016)
